The cooling system of a liquid-cooled vehicle circulates liquid through pipes and channels in the engine. When the liquid flows through the high-temperature engine, it absorbs heat, thus reducing the temperature of the engine. After the liquid flows through the engine, it flows to the heat exchanger (or radiator), and the heat in the liquid is emitted into the air through the heat exchanger.

Some early automobiles used air-cooling technology, but modern automobiles hardly use this method. This cooling method is not to circulate liquid in the engine, but to heat the cylinder through the aluminium sheet attached to the surface of the cylinder block. A powerful fan blows these aluminium sheets into the air to cool the engine.

The whole engine cooling system consists of two systems: cooling water loop and cooling air channel. Cooling water circuit includes engine, water pipe, thermostat, radiator and cooling water pump. Cooling air passes through the intercooler, radiator, fan and engine in turn, and takes away the heat generated by the engine.

The engine is the heat source of the whole system. About one third of the energy generated by engine fuel combustion is transferred to the cooling system or directly emitted to the atmosphere through the cylinder wall as heat. In the cooling water loop, the throttler controls the flow through the wax ball control. When the thermostat is not opened, all the water flows back to the engine through the bypass channel through the pump. When the thermostat is opened, the cooling water enters the radiator, and the water from the radiator and the bypass water mix at the pump.
