What are the symptoms of a broken fuel pump?

As the core component of the vehicle fuel supply system, the fuel pump can directly affect the normal operation of the engine once it malfunctions. Car owners can detect problems in a timely manner through the following typical symptoms during daily driving.
one ️⃣  Difficulty or inability to start
When the performance of the fuel pump decreases, the fuel pressure cannot reach the standard value required for engine start-up, which may result in the engine "not starting" or multiple attempts to start. If the buzzing sound of the fuel pump suddenly disappears or the sound noticeably weakens before starting some vehicles, it is usually an early signal of fuel pump failure. It is recommended to immediately test the fuel system pressure.
two ️⃣  Weak acceleration or power interruption
When the accelerator is pressed forcefully during driving, if the engine experiences "stuffiness", slow acceleration response, or sudden power interruption during high-speed driving (especially under heavy load conditions such as rapid acceleration and climbing), it may be due to the fuel pump's inability to provide sufficient fuel flow. This situation is more common when the fuel pump impeller is worn or the pump body is blocked. It is necessary to check in a timely manner whether the fuel pump's supply pressure and flow rate meet the vehicle manual standards.
three ️⃣  Unstable idle or engine shaking
Fuel pump failure may lead to unstable fuel supply, causing the engine to experience fluctuations in speed and noticeable shaking of the vehicle body while idling. Some vehicles may also experience symptoms such as black smoke from the exhaust pipe and abnormal increase in fuel consumption, which are usually caused by uneven fuel injection and incomplete combustion of fuel entering the exhaust system.
four ️⃣  Engine stalls while driving and difficult to restart
When the fuel pump fails completely, the vehicle may suddenly stall while driving and cannot be restarted immediately after stalling. This situation poses a certain level of danger, especially when driving on highways or busy traffic sections. It is necessary to immediately turn on the hazard warning flashers, move the vehicle to a safe area, and contact professional maintenance personnel for inspection.
five ️⃣  Abnormal fuel gauge display
The fuel pump and fuel level sensor of some car models are integrated together. If there is a mechanical failure of the fuel pump, it may affect the accuracy of the level sensor, causing the fuel gauge pointer to be inaccurate or suddenly reset to zero. However, it should be noted that abnormalities in the fuel gauge may also be caused by issues with the sensor itself or the circuit, and should be comprehensively judged in conjunction with other symptoms.
When the vehicle shows the above symptoms, it is recommended to promptly go to a regular maintenance institution for fuel system testing, including fuel pressure testing, fuel pump resistance inspection, etc. In daily use, it is advisable to avoid driving the vehicle at low fuel levels for extended periods of time, as fuel pumps typically rely on fuel for cooling and lubrication. Low fuel levels may cause the fuel pump to overheat and shorten its lifespan. In addition, regularly replacing the fuel filter can effectively prevent impurities from entering the fuel pump and reduce the probability of malfunctions.
